Stars, Ouchies, and Schedules

You may remember my post "Becoming a Morning Person".  Well, that hasn't been going so well :(  Although, I'm getting up early enough to not feel rushed, I have not been doing a very good job at getting up at 5:30.  It's obvious my problem is the fact that I'm a night owl and have a problem forcing myself to go to bed.  Even if I feel dead tired all day, longing for the moment my head will hit that pillow, I seem to get a second wind around 9:00 p.m.  By this time I have cooked dinner, cleaned up the kitchen, showered, made my lunch for the following day, and have sat down to relax on the couch.  I feel the need to unwind with Matt and my computer around this time, not go to bed.

To help me with this, Matt has developed the star-reward system.  Similar to when I was in kindergarten, only I don't actually receive a star sticker...maybe that's why it doesn't seem to be working.

Here is how his star system works (which he came up with during the Olympics):

If I go to bed by 9:30 p.m. = Gold star
10:00 = Silver star
10:30 = Bronze star
After 10:30 = No star for me

I appreciate him wanting to try to help me, but will trying so hard to change who I am deep down work? Or am I just destined to struggle with this forever?  I'm going to keep trying either way, I'm not one to give up what I start without a fight!

I'm not working tomorrow (keep reading and I will explain), so I will be happy with a silver star tonight.  As for why I'm not working today...the dental office where I work decided to "lay me off" on Mondays.  I was originally hired as a second hygienist on Mondays (and the only hygienist Tue, Thur, Fri).  My office is getting busier, which is a good thing, but Mondays are too crazy for my dentist having to do exams for two hygienists every hour on top of all her patients.  So, I was let go on Mondays and will only be working Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and I've been working one Saturday a month.  At first I was a little bummed, but now have been reminded how perfect God's timing is.  Trying to finish my B.S. by June and taking additional classes to do so has been a little overwhelming.  I've done worse in the past, even working three jobs while taking my prerequisites for hygiene school; but I have finally reached my burnout point now that I'm to year ten of college combined with working.  Having Mondays off is going to be SO helpful in finishing things up.

As for why I will not be working tomorrow...

Saturday night I was cleaning up after cooking dinner and sliced my finger on a knife.  Ouchie!  We have some Henckels that we wash by hand and that's when "the incident" happened.  I've never seen myself bleed like that before and it gives me chills to think about "it".  I considered going to the emergency room, but then figured I'd just suck it up and called my doctor this morning.  I am current on my tetanus shot, and have been keeping it clean, and just need to work on keeping my finger straight so it heals properly and I'm not left with a witch finger. Keeping it bent feels best unfortunately.

Anyway, as a hygienist, my right index finger is highly important to my work.  I am having a hard time using a fork and spoon, and am pretty sure my instruments and utilization won't be kind to my strategically placed war wound.  In case you're wondering, typing is a little slow, but fine because my finger is kept bent and I don't need to use pressure.  If I had a desk job this wouldn't be an issue.

So I'm pretty confident (praying) that I'll be healed enough to work Thursday.

As for God's perfect timing (again)...

I have plenty of school work to finish over the next week to complete the quarter.  Having Mondays (and now tomorrow) off is unfortunate for my paycheck, but perfect for school...and my sanity.  And my new work schedule should help me reap plenty of Gold Stars!

Time to get back to work on school stuff after a nice blogging lunch break.
